HD FAQs: What you need to know about your HD programming:
1. Are digital and high-definition (HD) programming the same thing?
No, digital and high-definition programming are not equal. While digital programming provides advanced image quality and sound, HD (the highest form of digital technology) makes for an even greater picture and sound. Imagine viewing your HD programs with up to 10 times the amount of pixels seen on ordinary TV – you’ll believe you’re a part of the action!
2. Why is HD programming better quality?
DIRECTV uses the latest HD technology giving you the ultimate viewing experience. HD programs have up to 10 times the amount of pixels seen on ordinary TV bringing life-like pictures into your own home. HDTV improves the way you view TV - giving you images with higher resolutions, brighter colors and enhanced clarity; and the way you hear TV - with crisp, high-quality, surround-sound audio capability.
3. Do I need a separate box if I have an integrated HDTV with a built-in tuner?
Yes, you will need a separate DirecTV HD receiver or DirecTV HD DVR to receive your programming. The built-in HD tuner that your HDTV is equipped will only allow you to receive the HD programming available over-the-air not the variety and abundance of programming available through satellite technology. Find out about the HD receiver and HD DVR.
4. Will there be more programming options available in HD?
DIRECTV currently offers HD channels such as ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, Discovery HD Theater™, HDNet, HDNet Movies, Universal HD and more.
In various cities local channels are broadcast in HD. With the use of an off-air antenna you can view such programs in their HD clarity. However, in some cities you can view HD local channels without the use of this antenna. By 2007 DirecTV plans to provide more than 1,500 local and over 150 national HD channels to consumers nationwide. As the programming trend continues to move towards HD you'll be there for all the world premiers. Check availability in your city.
